Artist's Description
I was very lucky to come upon this cicada as it was emerging from its shell. Here it is, still very new and clinging to its shell, enjoying the sunshine and working on stretching its wings.
About Patricia Overmoyer
I am a 1977 graduate of Cornell's School of Architecture, Art & Planning with a BFA in Fine Arts, majoring in painting and printmaking. Upon graduation I received the Goodwin Sands Memorial Medal for "exceptional merit in art". After a long hiatus, I have recently resumed my art career, currently concentrating on digital photography. I so love this...Ive wanted to do a portrait of a cicada emerging from shell since childhood...what a beautiful and rare capture!
Patricia Overmoyer replied:
Thanks, Alexandria. Actually I have to give credit to my daughter for finding this one. We watched it for a long time, coming out of its shell and slowly going through some pretty dramatic changes. We were very lucky!

This has a wonderful duality to it! I hear them all the time in the Summer of Georgia. I have never actually seen them, and its like they know when it is going to get hotter!! Then they are quiet when the rain comes here.
Patricia Overmoyer replied:
Thanks, Rebecca! I agree, cicadas are fascinating!

Great capture! I have seen the shells and the fully mature Cicadas but never caught one at this moment. Good for you!

Thanks, Doris!
